What sustainability measures does the Hotel Der Löwe implement?
The 4-star superior Hotel Der Löwe in Leogang follows a holistic, certified sustainability concept under the motto ‘Slow Travel’.
We have been awarded both the Austrian Eco-Label and the EU Ecolabel, and are registered as a Climate Alliance business.
The hotel’s specific sustainability measures are divided into the following key areas:
- Energy & Heating
Renewable energy: Hotel Der Löwe relies 100 per cent on green energy sources, including its own rooftop photovoltaic system (17 kWp) and the primary use of green electricity generated from hydropower.
District heating & geothermal energy: Heating is provided via the local biomass district heating network.
The outdoor pool, which is open all year round, is heated in an environmentally friendly manner using a geothermal heat pump.
CO₂ savings: Thanks to highly energy-efficient construction and modern heat recovery systems, the hotel avoids around 90 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually.
- Cuisine & Regional Food
The kitchen’s philosophy is based on the continuous expansion of the use of organic, seasonal and regional produce from the Pinzgau region.
- Certified Cosmetics
Only certified organic natural cosmetic products are used in the spa and guest rooms.
- Mobility & Travel
E-mobility: The hotel has its own e-mobility charging infrastructure for guests, as well as its own electric vehicles.
Rail discount: To encourage CO₂-neutral travel by public transport, the hotel offers guests arriving by train a 3% discount on their room booking.- Resources & Resource Conservation
‘Trees for Tomorrow’ reforestation project: Guests can actively help conserve resources. Anyone who opts out of daily room cleaning (thereby saving water and cleaning products) ensures that the hotel donates one tree per day as part of a regional reforestation initiative in Austria.
- Sustainable construction:
Local, natural materials such as regional timber, stone, sheep’s wool and leather are used in the fitting out and renovation of the ‘Nature Rooms’.
- Waste & Water:
The hotel operates a rigorous waste prevention and separation scheme, uses digitalisation to reduce paper consumption and has its own low-temperature laundry facility. Furthermore, revitalised Grander water flows throughout the building.
Does the hotel hold any environmental certifications?

The kitchen is characterised by the following regional initiatives:
- Local suppliers: Organic eggs for breakfast, organic yoghurt and organic quark from the Zieferhof in Leogang.
- Cheese & dairy products: These are sourced almost exclusively directly from the Pinzgau region.
- Home-grown produce: The kitchen harvests fresh herbs directly from its own ‘Löwengartl’ garden.
- Strict avoidance of convenience foods: All sauces, soups, pasta and sorbets are 100% homemade. Ready-made products and non-sustainable foods have been completely removed from the menu.

No, the Hotel Der Löwe does not have air conditioning in its rooms.
As part of its sustainability strategy, the hotel has made a conscious decision to rely on fresh mountain air rather than air conditioning, in order to keep energy consumption and CO₂ emissions as low as possible. The traditional, sustainable construction using natural materials such as locally sourced timber also helps to create a pleasant indoor climate.
Smoking & non-smoking
The entire interior of the hotel is a non-smoking area.
