Relaxing holiday with dog in Leogang
I'm LEA, the resident dog at the Hotel Der Löwe lebe frei (The Lion Live Free) in Leogang. I moved here in February 2023 and after a short time, I felt right at home. It's really cool here because I'm constantly making new dog friends. Sometimes I get a little jealous because the guest dogs are allowed more than me, but that's not a big deal. This way, I always have someone to play with! From the hotel, there are great hikes to mountain pastures with mountain huts in every season.
What dogs are allowed to do in the hotel
Guest dogs are even allowed to eat with us. Not in the main restaurant, but there is a dedicated area in the lobby. A dog blanket, a bowl, and a "Dog in Room" sign are provided in the room. They are truly pampered... There are paw towels at the entrance for drying off. I don't like that at all, but it has to be. The wellness area and the main restaurant are off-limits to my colleagues. Dogs are welcome at Löwengartl, so I can finally play with them. All levels are dog-friendly and easily accessible by elevator. We charge €40 per day (excluding food). Please state this when booking.

Important information for a relaxing holiday with your dog
Dogs are very welcome in the region, and like everywhere else, there are a few rules. Leashes are mandatory in Saalfelden Leogang. In Saalfelden, there's a small agility course where I can run off-leash and always meet someone. You need a muzzle for the cable car (I don't like that at all). In Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn, there's a dog fee of €6 per day. A weekly ticket costs €25 (also valid on the Kitzsteinhorn and Schmittenhöhe).
My favorite hikes around Leogang
Birnbachloch
The Birnbachloch is an impressive karst spring at 1,291 metres and was once Europe's lowest glacier, from where the Munich breweries got their ice to cool their beer. We always drive a little way by car to the Passauer Hütte car park. But you can also start directly from the hotel. On the way there, you pass the Inschlag barbecue area, which invites you to take a cosy break. This varied hike takes you through the wild and romantic Wetzsteinwald forest, into the Ullachtal valley to the Birnbachloch: a small lake in the mountain where you can take a dip. But be careful: don't go in too far! It really is a hole -:)
I always find water at the clear stream, which we cross a few times. It's a nice circular walk . Turn off at the shelter hut on the way back and cross the suspension bridge and a shady forest back to the hotel or car park. Walking time approx. 3 hours.Path of silence via the hermitage to the Steinalm
Via the Einsiedeln hermitage to the Steinalm
The path of silence leads you via the hermitage on the Palfen up to the idyllic Steinalm and invites you to switch off and enjoy.
First you head in a north-westerly direction. After walking past Lichtenberg Castle for around 45 minutes, you reach the Einsiedelei am Palfen, one of the last inhabited hermitages in Europe. It is built below a cave on the rocks and is one of the highlights along the trail with a small chapel and a real hermit. From there, follow the Fuchssteig, a short, narrow and steep path. This takes you to the hiking trails marked 21 and 412c, which lead to the picturesque Steinalm at 1,268 metres after about an hour's walk. The Steinalm is located in the middle of the Steinernes Meer and offers breathtaking views and delicious Pinzgau specialities such as cheese dumplings, doughnuts or a regional snack platter.
Saalachtaler Höhenweg - From summit to summit
The Saalachtaler Höhenweg is one of the most beautiful ridge paths in the region. As you hike along the ridge, you can enjoy marvellous views of the surrounding area. We take the Asitz or Steinberg cable car up to the mountain station at 1,760 metres, and then off we go. The tour starts at the mountain station and you walk in a westerly or easterly direction.
High trail west: Impressive hike over the 1,914 m high Asitzkopf, the highest peak along the route, to the Schönleitenhütte and on to the Seidelalm. The next summit is the Wildenkarkogel at 1,910 metres. Continuing along the high-altitude trail, you next reach the Mardeckkopf (1,817 m) and the Kohlmaiskopf (1,794 m). The route then leads downhill to the Maisereck (1,675 m). From there, the route climbs slightly uphill to the Barnkogel (1,709 m), the last summit along the route, before returning to the valley. You reach the Unterberghaus via the Spielbergalmen. From there you can take a taxi back or hike further into the valley (but that's really far...). Walking time approx. 6 hours.
Cow in sight
When we hike through alpine pastures, we're told to "BEWARE OF THE COW!" We always give the herd of cows a wide berth. If a cow does come toward us, I'm let off the leash. I'm faster than the cow! That way, nothing happens to me or my owner.
Just a minute from the hotel is the Messnerbach stream. This is the quickest way to cool off in the summer. In addition to countless clear mountain streams, there are also several lakes where dogs are allowed to swim. I'm still a bit water-shy, but maybe you can show me how it's done...

So much for exploring.
