Winter holidays with children in the Salzburg mountains: tips and activities for families
Snowflakes in their hair, rosy cheeks from playing in the snow and that sparkle in their eyes when the mountains suddenly become a giant adventure playground – a winter holiday with children in Saalfelden Leogang is more than just a holiday. It is family time that will remain in your memories forever.
With perfectly groomed slopes, safe toboggan runs, winter hiking trails and cosy alpine huts, the Salzburg region offers perfect conditions.
But what are the best family slopes? What can you experience without skis? And how do you plan your trip so that everyone – from toddlers to parents – gets their money's worth? In this guide, you will find the most beautiful experiences, practical tips and family-friendly activities for your unforgettable winter holiday with us in the mountains.
The Skicircus: a family-friendly ski resort!
- 270 km of slopes, including 140 km of blue, particularly easy runs that are ideal for families and children.
- Separate children's areas with conveyor belts and magic carpets.
- Colourful figures, wave tracks, fun slopes, race tracks with timekeeping → fun and action even away from the normal slopes.
- Ski schools with specialised children's ski instructors and all-day supervision including lunch.
- Discounted Family Card for families with small children up to and including 3 years of age (parents can take turns using 1 ski ticket and only pay a partner fee of €15)
For parents, the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn means that the kids have fun – and they can also hit the slopes themselves without any stress. The Schantei family lift behind the Hotel Der Löwe is particularly suitable for this. Here you can also ski 3 times a week in the evening under floodlights.
Packing list for skiing holidays with children
Since the children will be spending a lot of time outdoors in the fresh air and may get wet, you should definitely pack the following items:
- Ski jacket (waterproof, windproof)
- Ski trousers or snow suit
- 2–3 sets of ski underwear (functional underwear, no cotton shirts!)
- 2–3 pairs of ski socks (high, without creases)
- Fleece jacket or mid-layer
- 2 pairs of ski gloves (one will ALWAYS get wet)
- Tube scarf/Buff (no long scarves!)
- Ski goggles and sunglasses, ski helmet
- Winter boots (waterproof)
- Hat for afterwards
- Small rucksack, water bottle

When is the best time for a winter holiday with children in Austria?
With children who are not yet of school age, the periods outside the school holidays are naturally ideal.
The weeks immediately after New Year (approx. 7–20 January) or Advent (before Christmas) are an insider tip: less crowded, more relaxed on the slopes, ski schools have more capacity.
Ski passes are also cheaper during this period and hotels offer off-season prices or special packages, e.g. including ski passes.
In February/March, on the other hand, conditions are often at their best with plenty of natural snow and more sunshine.
Löwetipp: Family mini route from Leogang (Asitz)

Warm up & easy descent towards Leogang
Blue piste 211: Wide, flat descent from the Asitz mountain station towards the valley. Ideal for children and beginners to warm up. -> Clearly marked on the map as the first blue run from Asitz.

Easter holidays with children in Leogang – skiing in the sunshine & family adventures in the mountains

Plenty of sunshine and pleasant temperatures
No more freezing cold winter – children spend more time outdoors, enjoy breaks in the snow and stay motivated on the slopes for longer.
Good snow conditions on the mountain
Thanks to modern snow-making technology and high altitude, skiing at Easter in Leogang is still possible – especially on the family-friendly slopes.
More relaxed learning at the ski school
Without the stress of mid-winter, children often learn faster. Ski lessons during the Easter holidays are ideal for beginners and little slope heroes.

Tip from the Easter Bunny: At Hotel Der Löwe, children up to the age of 16 receive a 50% discount on room rates from mid-March onwards, and during the Easter holidays, children up to the age of 15 (born in 2010 or later) receive a free ski pass when one parent purchases at least a 4-day ski pass! Fun in the snow without skiing
Winter fun for the whole family
When the snow glistens in Leogang, a real winter wonderland begins for children. The snow-covered mountains become a huge adventure playground – with toboggan runs, winter trails, ice skating on natural lakes or in the ice rink, and even horse-drawn sleighs. Here, families can be outdoors together, laughing, marvelling and experiencing nature.
And since small children in particular are rarely happy on skis for 6 hours, there is plenty of variety in Saalfelden Leogang! Perfect for days when motivation on the slopes is, let's say, fluctuating.

- Toboggan runs (illuminated in the evening = highlight) – the Löwerodeln toboggans and snow discs are available for our guests
- Horse-drawn sleigh rides like something out of a fairy tale
- Ice skating on the natural lake or in the indoor rink
- Torchlight hikes
- Winter hiking trails, including routes suitable for pushchairs
- And at the Hotel Der Löwe, the Family SPA with indoor pool, saunas and a 32-degree outdoor pool is the perfect place to splash around.
Tobogganing in Leogang – thrills guaranteed!
Sledging is often the absolute highlight of a winter holiday for children. Leogang has safe and wide toboggan runs that are perfect for families.

On your sleds, get set, go!
Sledging at the Schanteilift
Whether with a lion sled or a snow disc: at the Schanteilift lift directly behind the hotel (only 300 metres away), you can enjoy tobogganing fun with your children day and night!
Biberg Saalfelden
6 km of tobogganing fun for the whole family. From the Bockareitstubn valley station, you can either use our shuttle service to the Huggenberg mountain inn or walk up (walking time approx. 1 hour). The first toboggan rental is located there. To reach the summit, continue alongside the toboggan run to the Biberg mountain inn (walking time approx. 45 minutes). Here you will find the toboggan rental directly at the mountain inn. The descent is possible day and night, as the toboggan run at Biberg is covered with artificial snow and illuminated.
LEO's tobogganing fun on the Asitz
Whether by day or by night – under the motto: ‘Up by train – down by toboggan!’ fun is guaranteed for everyone. Look forward to a total of 4 kilometres of toboggan run and a superlative holiday experience on the Asitz toboggan run!
Hoametzl Hut
The fun on two runners on the 1.5 km illuminated toboggan run is great fun during the day, but the evening tobogganing excursion is of course particularly exciting and appealing!
Winter hiking – discovery tour in the snow
Winter hiking is a real expedition for children. On the cleared paths around Leogang, little explorers can search for tracks in the snow, marvel at icicles or observe snow crystals.
There are flat, well-groomed winter hiking trails in the valley directly from the hotel, e.g. with a stop at the Sinnlehenalm hut (only half an hour's walk).
With the Saalfelden Leogang Card, non-skiers can use the mountain railway once per stay in winter. At the Asitz mountain station at 1,760 m, there is also a great panoramic winter hiking trail away from the ski slopes.

Conclusion: The Saalfelden Leogang region is the perfect place for your winter holiday with children.
