When is the best time to go skiing in Leogang?

Leogang is located in the Salzburg region and is part of the Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn ski circuit – one of the largest and most modern ski areas in Austria. With over 270 kilometres of slopes, it offers skiing fun for beginners, families and professionals alike.

The Hotel Der Löwe is centrally located in the heart of Leogang. The entrance to the ski circus is only a few minutes away. A free ski shuttle takes you directly to the Steinbergbahn or Asitzbahn, where the skiing fun begins.

Yes, Leogang is a family-friendly ski resort with numerous practice slopes, ski schools and children's slopes. The ski schools in Leogang offer professional supervision for children and beginners.

Tip: The Schantei family lift is located directly behind our hotel. Here, children can practise their first turns, try out the new fun slopes, jump off ski jumps, go tobogganing and much more. In addition, night skiing with floodlights takes place three times a week.

This year, depending on snow conditions, the ski season will start on 28 November 2025 and last until 6 April 2026 (Easter Monday). Hotel Der Löwe will start the winter season on 5 December 2025.

In addition to classic skiing, there are a whole range of great activities in and around Leogang in winter!

Winter hiking & snowshoeing

 Hike through snow-covered landscapes in the Leogang Mountains – winter hiking trails are also well signposted.
 Also possible: guided snowshoe tours through the peaceful, untouched winter landscape.
Cross-country skiing & Nordic skiing

There are approx. 150 km of trails for classic cross-country skiing or skating.
The Ritzensee lake near Saalfelden serves as a Nordic park with special offers, for example.
Tobogganing / sledging

There are illuminated natural toboggan runs, including on the Biberg and on the Asitz mountain (day and night toboggan run).

Leogang offers a wide range of ski courses for both children and adults, as well as childcare services.

Below is some key information. We generally recommend contacting the respective ski school directly. Early bird and online discounts are often available.

Ski course offers

• The ski schools in Leogang offer a wide range of options: group courses for children and adults, private lessons and special courses (e.g. technique, freeriding) are available.
• Children's ski courses are offered from around 3 years of age – with small groups, kindergartens (‘Kinderland’) and other childcare options.
• Courses typically start on Sunday or Monday for children and run for at least 3 days. Times are, for example, 10:00-12:00 and 13:00-15:00, including a lunch break with supervision.
• Course content: for beginners (first turns) to advanced, technique improvement, fun and group lessons.

Yes – there is excellent childcare available, especially for very young children and for times outside of ski lessons:

At Skiszene Altenberger: two children's ski areas – e.g. Krallis Kinderland and Leos Kinderland – with groups of max. 5 children supervised by certified ski instructors.
Childcare is available for children aged 2-3 and above. 
Examples: The ‘KIDS ON SKI’ offer for 3-5-year-olds includes a package with 5 half-day courses, equipment and a ski pass – i.e. even very early beginners are included, with childcare provided.
Childcare is also available without active ski lessons – e.g. childminders or group childcare at ‘Villa Kunterbunt’ at the Asitz valley station.

Shuttle in / Ski out

Classic ‘ski-in/ski-out’ access (i.e. skiing right up to the hotel door) is almost possible – you can ski close to the hotel and then reach it on foot in a very short time. Many guests appreciate the central location in the middle of the village and the good connections to the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn ski area.

At our partner RSLeogang (only 300 metres from Hotel Der Löwe), Löwe guests receive a 10% discount on ski hire and a ski pick-up and delivery service.

Yes, Hotel Der Löwe naturally has a comfortable ski room, which is accessible to our winter guests at ground level. Each room has its own heated ski locker (there are extra-large lockers for the family apartments) for safe and convenient storage of skis and snowboards.

Modern lift facilities: The Leogang mountain railways are very well developed, with fast gondolas and chair lifts, which significantly reduces waiting times. The Skicircus is one of the largest and most modern ski areas in Austria.
During the week (except during holiday periods), it is usually very relaxed.
The Schanteilift lift is located directly behind the hotel – perfect for beginners, short toboggan rides or night skiing (floodlit slopes 3 times a week!).
When can it get busier?

During the Christmas holidays and semester breaks, there may be some waiting time in the morning at the main lifts (e.g. Asitzbahn in Leogang or Schattberg X-press in Saalbach). This is especially true between 9:00 and 10:30 a.m., when many skiers start their day.
Tip from the Löwen team:

Start your day of skiing a little later – e.g. with a hearty breakfast. On many days during the week, you will have almost free rein on the slopes!

Or take advantage of the early start of the mountain railways from 8:00 a.m. and fortify yourself after skiing. We serve our gourmet breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

There are over 60 ski huts and mountain restaurants in the area, offering everything from breakfast and lunch to sundowner drinks. 

The huts serve typical Austrian dishes (e.g. cheese dumplings, Kaiserschmarrn) as well as modern cuisine and international dishes.
