Advent & Christmas in the Salzburg region
Customs and traditions amid mountain magic and sparkling lights
The Christmas season in Leogang and the Salzburg region is more than just a quiet time—it is an immersion in ancient Alpine customs, lively traditions, and an atmosphere that you will only find here.
Between snow-covered mountain peaks, atmospheric Advent markets, and Austria's authentic Christmas customs, a magic unfolds that delights our Löwen guests year after year.
Christmas markets & Advent events in the Salzburg region
Mountain Advent in Pinzgau
Small Advent markets with handicrafts, regional cuisine, brass bands, and alpine traditions. Perfect for families and anyone who appreciates an authentic alpine Advent.
Salzburg Advent Singing & atmospheric Christmas markets
Whether it's the famous Salzburg Christmas market on Cathedral Square, the Hellbrunn Advent Magic, or the smaller, romantic markets in the surrounding villages, e.g., in Zell am See, you can feel this special blend of tradition and contemplation everywhere.
Krampus & Perchten: Wild, loud, and ancient customs
A real highlight of the pre-Christmas period are the Krampus and Perchten runs, which have a long history in Pinzgau. In Leogang, the terrifying figures – complete with artistically carved masks and heavy bells – parade through the streets. The combination of tradition, mysticism, and regional craftsmanship makes these runs an unforgettable experience.
On December 5 and 6, Krampus traditionally appears together with St. Nicholas. While St. Nicholas rewards good children with small gifts, Krampus, with his wild mask, symbolizes the punishment of naughty children. Goosebumps guaranteed!

Krampus
Krampus:
A demonic figure closely associated with Saint Nicholas. Krampus is Saint Nicholas' companion and symbolically punishes disobedient children.Perchten
Perchten:
Figures from pre-Christian Germanic customs, often associated with the goddess Perchta. Appear between Christmas and January 6 (Raunächte). Drive away evil spirits and bring good luck, fertility, and protection for the new year.
There are Schönperchten: beautiful, colorful, benevolent, and Schiachperchten: ugly, demonic, loud.
Anklöckler – musical heralds of Advent
The Anklöckler are a very special custom in the Salzburg region. Groups dressed in traditional costumes go from house to house, singing old Advent songs and wishing blessings for the coming year.
This custom is a unique experience for visitors – impressive, authentic, and touching.
Rachngeh’n – Rauhnächte in the Alps
Between Christmas and January 6, the Rauhnächte (rough nights) take center stage in Austria. During the “Rachngeh'n” ritual, houses and stables are fumigated with incense and juniper to bring protection and blessings. This custom symbolizes transition, letting go, and new beginnings.
At Hotel Der Löwe, it is our tradition to visit our guests on December 24, Christmas Eve, with incense and wish them good health and happiness for the coming year. Of course, a shot of schnapps for good health is also a must!

Christmas at Hotel Der Löwe
Mountain Christmas in Leogang: Romance between alpine huts and snow
Christmas Eve in Leogang is more than just a holiday: it is a deeply rooted experience combining nature, tradition, and genuine Salzburg hospitality. While outside the snow-covered Leogang mountains are bathed in soft winter light, inside the scent of pine branches and homemade cookies fills the warm rooms. The atmosphere is calm and uniquely contemplative.

Festive Nativity Scenes & Handicrafts
Many homes in Leogang feature ornate, hand-carved nativity scenes. These reflect local craftsmanship and have often been in the family for generations. Around Christmas Eve, many families also visit the nativity scene exhibitions and nativity trails in the region.
Joint Christmas bell ringing
December 24 begins with the Rorate Mass in the Leogang parish church. The church bells ring out, setting the mood for Christmas Eve. Many locals and visitors attend the midnight mass at 10 p.m., which is accompanied by brass bands and a choir.
Silent Night – World Cultural Heritage from the Salzburg Region
The world's most famous Christmas carol was born in the Salzburg region. Many places – including around Leogang – commemorate its creation with concerts, devotions, and museums. It is a powerful part of the region's Christmas history.
The Christmas carol “Silent Night, Holy Night” was first performed in Austria in 1818. The lyrics were written by Joseph Mohr in 1816, and the melody was composed by Franz Xaver Gruber in 1818. The song was sung for the first time by the two of them in St. Nicholas Church in Oberndorf near Salzburg.

Christmas cuisine from the Pinzgau region
As much a part of Christmas in the Salzburg region as snow is to the mountains: regional specialties! Typical dishes include
Bachlkoch,
Mettnsuppe, and
Kletzenbrot.
On Christmas Eve itself, a simpler festive meal is traditionally served – often soup, fried sausages, or fish dishes such as trout. On December 25, larger festive meals follow, featuring goose, roast meat, or regional specialties. Curious about a few recipes?

Bachlkoch
Bachlkoch is a traditional and simple lunch dish for December 24 in Pinzgau. The focus here is not on the food itself, but on being together with the whole family.
You have to like it (-: Here is the recipe:
Bring the milk to a boil.
Then slowly sprinkle the flour into the hot milk using a sieve and a whisk to prevent lumps from forming.
When the mixture has thickened, bring it to a boil again and mix in a pinch of salt and a tablespoon of butter.
Feel free to refine it with honey and sprinkle with poppy seeds.
Apple or pear slices go well with this dish.Kletzenbrot
Kletzenbrot is a traditional Advent pastry containing dried pears, plums, figs, and nuts.
Salzburger Mettnsuppe
Sausage soup on Christmas Eve is a tradition throughout the Salzburg region on December 24. Typical Mettn sausages (Mettn = Christmas Mass), also known as “Frische,” made from fine veal and pork mince, are used for this dish.
