5 reasons for a winter holiday in the Salzburg mountains

I've lived in Leogang for almost 30 years now and look forward to 4 seasons every year, just like when I was a child. Back then, there was plenty of snow even at lower altitudes. We could ski right behind the house, slide down the slopes on plastic bags and experience a white Christmas. In my home region of Rhineland-Palatinate, there is still snow from time to time. But this is no comparison to what Austria has to offer. Ready for a winter holiday in the Salzburg mountains?

1. the feeling of ‘winter’ with snow-covered mountains

It's always like a touch of magic when the first snowflakes fall from the sky, usually in November. We are all eagerly waiting to finally be able to trudge through the snowy landscapes or make our first turns on the ski slopes. We are looking forward to the cold season! Now is the time for tobogganing, ski touring, skiing, ice skating, cross-country skiing, horse-drawn sleigh rides and winter hiking.

2. the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn

The Skicircus, also known today as #homeoflässig, has been around since 1945 and the advertising slogan ‘the most laid-back ski area in the Alps’ lives up to its promise. From easy family runs and freeride routes to the World Cup piste, skiers are offered everything on 408 kilometres of pistes. And all this with 1 ticket - with the Ski Alpin Card, the network is one of the largest ski areas in Austria!

3. traditional Pinzgau cuisine

After an eventful winter's day in the fresh mountain air, you will be hungry and Austrian cuisine has plenty to offer winter holidaymakers to look forward to!

There are plenty of cosy huts with traditional dishes to stop off at. Right on the ski piste, while winter hiking or on a romantic horse-drawn sleigh ride in the valley. Now is the time for a delicious Kaiserschmarren, a sweet yeast dumpling, a traditional Wiener Schnitzel, a hearty Kaspressknödelsuppe, crispy Pinzgauer Kasnock'n, a Tiroler Gröst'l or simply a good Brettljause with bacon and cheese from regional farmers. To round off the meal, there is of course an apple strudel with vanilla sauce made to grandma's recipe.

The popular Kaiserschmarren course with host Elisabeth Madreiter takes place every Monday at Hotel Der Löwe.

4. clear winter air - a holiday for body, mind & soul

A winter holiday in Salzburger Land is a contrast to everyday life and invites us to enjoy the fresh mountain air and clear our heads. Winter is the best time of year to recharge your batteries, find yourself in nature and get your circulation going. After a day in the healthy mountain air, we can sometimes be really chilled. Then we look forward to a warm fire in the crackling fireplace, a hot bath or a sauna infusion that lets us breathe deeply again.

Did you know that there is more oxygen in the cold winter air than in the warm summer air? In colder air, the air molecules are closer together, i.e. the air is denser and therefore contains more healthy oxygen. Conscious deep breathing brings more oxygen into the lungs and physical activity in the fresh winter air can help to increase the oxygen content in the blood. The mountain village of Leogang lies at an altitude of approx. 800 metres and is the ideal place to enjoy the healthy mountain air.

5. Austria's warm hospitality

Servus & welcome to Leogang in the Salzburg mountains

It is not without reason that Austria is an internationally popular holiday destination. Honest hospitality is very important here. Whether it's a rustic ski hut or an upmarket award-winning restaurant - here you'll still find the warmth and genuine, regional dishes that we enjoy. We meet each other in an open and friendly manner with a friendly ‘Grias di’ and everyone feels welcome and at home. Simple hospitality that is palpable.

‘Talking brings people together’ - on holiday, this often leads to a nice conversation at the hotel bar, in the ski gondola and certainly with Rupert Madreiter. Host at Hotel Der Löwe, who was born to be a host. Many regular guests walk through the door and say ‘Home again at last’. Welcome to Hotel Der Löwe!
